Who Can Participate?
Our applications are open worldwide, and we welcome anyone at least 18 years of age to apply.
What If I Don't Know How to Code?
You do not need any prior coding experience to participate! We will provide all participants with starter "data pack," and there will be drop-in hours with mentors to help you get across the finish line.
What If I Don't Have Any Experience with Writing Policy Memos?
Not a problem! We will provide general writing guides along with comprehensive workshops to show you all of the foundations for drafting your own successful policy memo. Additionally, you will be able to connect with our experienced mentor network through drop-in hours to receive additional help.
Is There An Associated Fee?
Nope! There are are no costs associated with this hackathon, and all workshops and starter data packs will be provided to you for free upon your acceptance. All you need to do is come ready with reliable WiFi and a go-getter attitude!
When Will I Need to Be Available?
Team assignments will be released at 9 AM PDT on Friday, and online resources will be made available for participants at that time. Actual hacking will begin at 8AM PDT on Saturday and last until 8PM PDT on Sunday. You do not need to be available 24/7 for the duration of the hackathon, but be sure to let your team members know when you will/will not be available.
I'm Not From the U.S., Can I Still Participate?
Absolutely! We do want to be transparent with the fact that being from U.S. universities, much of our mentor network is concentrated domestically. We will do our absolute best to support all international participants, and we look forward to the unique ideas you can contribute.
What Happens After the Hackathon?
Our organizing team has worked to establish a mentor network of academics and professionals interested in supporting winning policy ideas. Policy proposals will be made open source, and winning teams will have the opportunity to receive guidance on connecting policy proposals with their target audiences.
